The University of Cincinnati used the long ball here Friday afternoon to defeat UAB 11-5 in the two team's Conference USA series opener at Johnny Bench Field.
The Bearcats (19-15 overall, 5-8 in C-USA) got three home runs in the game, including a solo home run by Ryan Minges, a two-run shot by Aaron Brown and a three-run blast by Chris Hamblen to provide most of UC's offensive punch. Brett Clark added a pair of doubles with three RBI.
The Blazers (19-16, 3-10) took an early 2-0 lead with run-scoring singles from Christian Reimers and Cory Acklus in the second.
UAB's lead was short-lived, though, as Minges got the Bearcats on the board with his ninth homer of the season with two outs in the bottom of the frame. The long ball came with two outs and was followed by two-run double by Clark to give the Bearcats the lead for good.
Blazer starter Joe Yarbrough, C-USA's leader in earned run average, got touched for seven runs on nine hits over three-plus innings. He also walked a pair and struckout one to suffer the loss and fall to 4-2.
UC starter Joey List (4-4) tossed six-plus innings and pitched around giving up six hits and seven walks along with a pair of strikeouts to get the win.
The Blazers, who left 12 runners in the tilt, closed the gap in the ninth with three runs. Chris George drove in the first run on a groundout, while the Blazers got another run on a UC error and a sacrifice fly by Matt Gaulden.
The game was played four hours prior to its original 6 p.m. EDT start time due to a current curfew imposed by the city of Cincinnati from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m. EDT Saturday.
