BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team takes on Conference USA-foe Louisiana Tech this upcoming weekend in Ruston, La. Friday night the two teams will kick off the series at 6 p.m. Saturday’s contest will begin at 3 p.m. and Sunday’s finale will be played at 1 p.m.
Green and Gold Suffer Mid-Week Setback
The UAB baseball team suffered a 7-2 loss to in-state foe Troy on Tuesday, April 1 at Regions Field. With the setback, UAB snapped its six-game winning streak against Troy.
Senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus led the Blazers on the night with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. De Jesus recorded his eighth RBI of the season on a single up the middle in the eighth. Redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims, in his first game since Saturday, March 22, registered an RBI against the Trojans, as well.
Following its series against No. 29 FIU, the UAB baseball team received national recognition for its 19-9 start to the 2014 season. UAB earned votes in the NCBWA Poll for the fourth consecutive week and received votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll.
Senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus was recognized on ESPN Sportscenter on Saturday, March 29. The senior outfielder made a diving catch in the squad’s 1-0 victory against No. 29 FIU. The play was named the No. 9 play of the day.
Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game said the UAB baseball team may be the surprise of the year Conference USA. In addition, Rogers called UAB’s duo of senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard and junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna an “A+ duo”.
