BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard of the UAB baseball team was named the Conference USA co-Pitcher of the Week along with Middle Tennessee's Zac Curtis, the conference announced on Monday. It marked the third time this season that Mallard had collected the conference honor.
Mallard threw a four-hit complete game shutout on Friday, March 28 against No. 29 FIU. Mallard shut out an FIU team that led Conference USA in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, home runs, total bases, and stolen bases heading into Friday night's contest.
The Cullman, Ala. native became the first UAB pitcher to record a complete game shutout since Alex Luna on April 24, 2013 against Alabama State. Mallard scattered four hits, struck out eight, and walked two on the night. It marked his fourth game in 2014 with at least eight strikeouts. In addition, he extended his streak to nine consecutive quality starts, dating back to 2013.
Mallard owns a 5-0 record on the year with a 0.85 ERA. In addition, he has struck out 53 batters and has limited opponents to a .131 batting average in 2014.
The UAB baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, April 1 as it hosts Troy in its Blazer on Base with Autism event. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Regions Field.
