Conference USA Release
IRVING, Texas – Thomas Lowery was recognized by Conference USA as Pitcher of the Week earlier today for his dominant performance on Sunday in a 5-0 win at WKU. The senior hurled the ninth complete game, one-hitter in league history.
“Thomas Lowery has been such a joy to coach the last four years so we couldn’t be happier for his C-USA Pitcher of the week recognition,” said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. “Thomas was absolutely dominant yesterday. I really can’t remember a pitcher being so totally in control of a game from start to finish. There was only one opposing player to reach second base the entire game. We are so proud of Thomas both as a pitcher and as a person.”
Lowery’s sensational performance came in the rubber match of the C-USA opening weekend for both the Blazers and Hilltoppers. The lefty needed just 87 pitches to get through the game and faced 28 batters, one above the minimum to get through a game. Lowery walked none and tied his career-best with six strikeouts.
It was the first UAB one-hitter since the season-opener in 2014 in which Lowery combined with Chase Mallard versus UT-Martin in a 5-0 win. Lowery picked up the save in the game throwing the final two frames.
This was the first one-hitter of eight-or-more innings from a Blazers starting pitcher since March 2, 2007 when Mitch Kloskowski did so in an 8-0 victory over eight innings against Central Arkansas. Lowery did not allow a single base runner to get into scoring position on his own doing, as the only Hilltopper to reach second base did so following an error and passed ball. He finished just one hit, one hit by pitch, and one error shy of a perfect game.
Lowery was remarkable in the final four innings. The only batter he allowed in that time came on a hit-by-pitch in the seventh inning but he immediately induced a 4-6-3 double play. It took the lefty just 39 pitches to get through the final four frames.
Lowery improved to 1-1 on the season. The Birmingham, Ala., native took sole possession of fourth for pitching appearances (79) in Blazers history. Lowery, making his third start of the season, matched his career starts entering the year.
This is the first time Lowery has earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week in his career. The Blazers Garrett Whitlock earned the honor opening weekend and centerfielder Brewer Hicklen was garnered Co-Hitter of the Week honors last week.
The Blazers host in-state rival Alabama Tuesday night at Regions Field at 6:30 p.m.
