BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team heads out to Honolulu, Hawaii for a four-game series with the University of Hawaii. UAB and Hawaii begin its four-game tilt on Thursday night at 11:35 p.m. CT. Friday and Saturday night’s contests are slated for 11:35 p.m. CT, as well. Sunday’s series finale is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT.
Second Straight Conference USA Series
UAB defeated Old Dominion on the road twice in a three-game series to take its second straight Conference USA series. It marked the sixth consecutive three-game series that the Blazers have won, dating back to the Tulane set in 2013.
Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard went 7.1 innings, gave up two earned runs, and struck out four in the squad’s 4-2 win on Friday, March 14. UAB exploded for eight runs, two coming off a home run from junior first baseman Jeff Schalk, en route to an 8-6 victory on Saturday, March 15. On Sunday, March 16, UAB suffered a 4-1 setback in the finale in Norfolk, Va.
Following its series at Old Dominion, the UAB baseball team received national recognition for its 16-5 start to the 2014 season. UAB earned votes in the NCBWA Poll for the second consecutive week.
The UAB baseball team has one of the top pitching staffs in collegiate baseball, according to the latest national statistical rankings. UAB ranks 24th in the country in strikeouts per nine innings (8.5) and 46th in hits allowed per nine innings (7.66). In addition, the Blazers have four shutouts on the year, which ranks 10th in the nation.
Individually, senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard ranks sixth in Division I baseball in strikeouts (41) and junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna is 13th in the country in strikeout-to-walk ratio (12.0)
