BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Play was halted due to inclement weather in Wednesday night's UAB baseball contest against Jacksonville State at Regions Field. Through six innings of play, the game will resume tomorrow in Jacksonville, Ala. at 6 p.m., followed by the originally scheduled game for Wednesday.

Jacksonville State (9-5, 3-0) currently leads the game, 4-3, in the top of the seventh inning. When play was halted, the visiting Gamecocks had loaded the bases with one out and senior outfielder Griff Gordon coming to bat.

UAB (13-3, 2-1) jumped out to an early lead against Jacksonville State, scoring three runs in the first inning. Junior outfielder Chase Davis opened the inning with a double down the right field line, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus hit a ground ball to the second base, scoring Davis, and reached on an error by the second baseman.

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum then hit an infield single. The Jacksonville State third baseman sent an errant throw to first base, allowing Gum to advance to second and De Jesus to third. Junior first baseman Jeff Schalk then hit a sacrifice fly to score De Jesus and advance Gum. In the next at bat, Gum scored on a straight steal of home. Gum became the first Blazer to steal home on a straight steal since Nick Crawford against Arkansas State on Feb. 19, 2011.

The visiting Gamecocks rallied to tie it up over the next two innings, scoring two runs in the second and one run in the third.

Great defending kept the Blazers in the contest. In the fourth inning, JSU freshman infielder Joe McGuire tried to get to third on a single from senior catcher Stephen Bartlett. Gum threw a laser to junior infielder Nathan Vincent and got McGuire at third.

UAB saved another run in the fifth. With men on second and third, JSU's Gordon hit a double to right center field. One run scored, but UAB caught Jacksonville State senior outfielder Michael Bishop. Davis collected the ball, fired it to Hamby, who threw it to redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims to record the out.

Tuesday's contest will be completed tomorrow night in Jacksonville, Ala. Following the completion of that game, UAB and Jacksonville State will play its game originally scheduled for Wednesday night.
