BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team will travel to Troy, Ala. on Tuesday to take on the Troy Trojans in a midweek nonconference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at Riddle-Pace Field.

Last Meeting: UAB rallied to defeat the Trojans, 4-3, in its second meeting of last season. The Blazers, trailing 3-1 in the eighth, scored three runs in the inning to take a one-run lead. Todd Wilkinson executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score pinch runner Coy Arrowood to put the Blazers ahead.
Baseball Squeezes By Troy, 4-3
The UAB baseball team rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three times capped off by Todd Wilkinson executing a suicide squeeze to defeat Troy, 4-3, at Young Memorial Field on Tuesday.
UAB finished 3-2 last week after sweeping a two-game midweek series against Saint Joseph's before going 1-2 at Arkansas State over the weekend.
The Blazers used an offensive outburst to take game one against Saint Joseph's and relied on strong pitching in game two. The Blazers scored a season-high 11 runs in their win on Tuesday against the Hawks with John Frost, Jacob German, and Tyler Mims each recording three hits in the game. On Wednesday, four UAB pitchers combined to limit Saint Joseph's to one run on five hits in a 2-1 victory.
UAB played its first extra-innings game of the season on Friday at Arkansas State. Tanner Bryant and Chase Mallard combined to pitch 11 innings and allowed only two runs but the Red Wolves staff held the Blazers lineup in check, as UAB fell 2-1. The Blazers were limited to one run, a Frost home run, in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader that the Blazers fell in 8-1.
UAB fell behind in game two of the doubleheader but rallied with a run in the eighth to tie the game, 2-2, before eventually taking the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth. Turner Lee pitched six scoreless innings in relief to earn the win while Frost had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a RBI, run scored and a stolen base.
Sam Kelley will get the nod for Tuesday's game with Troy. The sophomore from Moundville, Ala., has registered a 2.25 ERA in three appearances this season. Kelley was the starting pitcher in the last Wednesday's pitching duel against Saint Joseph's. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out two in the no decision.
Troy Scouting Report
Troy comes in with an 11-3 record, having won its last five contests. Over the weekend, Troy took two from Hartford and concluded the weekend with a win against Southeastern Louisiana. The Trojans outscored the opposition 20-7 in those three games, including holding its opponent to one run over the last contests.
Junior Danny Collins leads the Trojans offensively with a .511 batting average, six doubles, two triples, five home runs and 23 RBI. Collins, Logan Pierce and Tyler Vaughn are each hitting over .380 for the team. As a team, the Trojans have recorded 33 doubles, eight triples, 13 home runs and are hitting .321.
Ryan Brady will start on the mound for Troy. The junior, from Trussville, Ala., has appeared in three games this season while starting once. He has allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks over 4.2 innings pitched. Brady's only start of the season was back on Feb. 17th against Florida A&M. He pitched three innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and two walks.
Hitter of the Week
Frost was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week after leading led UAB with a .474 batting average in five games over the week. Frost laced nine hits in 19 at bats, scored five runs and knocked in five while posting a .522 on-base percentage and .632 slugging percentage. The Decatur, Ala., native recorded multiple hits in three of the five games and knocked in at least one run in four of five contests. Frost leads the team with four three-hit games this season and seven multiple hit games.
Prinzing Getting On Base
Ryan Prinzing had extended his reached base streak to a team high 11 games before going 0-for-1 in the second game of the doubleheader against Arkansas State. Prinzing leads the Blazers in doubles (3), on-base percentage (.450), and hit by pitches (5). He is second on the team in batting average (.327) and runs scored (7).
Playing The Close Ones
UAB is 6-2 in games decided by two runs or fewer this year, going 3-2 in 1-run games and 3-0 in 2-run contests. Last week, UAB went 2-1 in games decided by two runs or fewer. Last season, the Blazers posted an impressive 13-5 record in games decided by a single run.
