BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team will play Jacksonville State in two mid-week games, alternating home sites. UAB will host Jacksonville State on Tuesday night at Regions Field, before heading to Jacksonville, Ala. on Wednesday night. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Birmingham, while the game at Rudy Abbott Field is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
Green and Gold Take First Conference USA Series
For the first time since the 2012 season, the UAB baseball team won its first Conference USA three-game series of the year. UAB dropped the series opener on Friday, March 7, and then rebounded with wins on Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 8 to take the three-game set against Middle Tennessee.
On Friday, March 7, senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard gave up his first runs in 26.0 innings pitched and did not factor into the decision. Middle Tennessee scored two runs in the ninth to take the opener. Redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims hit a bases-clearing double on Saturday, March 8 to give UAB a 6-4 win. Junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna clinched the series with a dominant outing on Sunday, March 9. Luna threw 8.0 scoreless innings, scattered four infield singles, matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts, and did not walk one batter.
Among The Best In Conference USA
The UAB baseball team ranks up with the top teams in Conference USA in the latest statistical rankings. As a team, the Blazers rank in the top three of more than 10 categories. Individually, three members of the team lead the league in at least one category.
UAB currently sports one of the best pitching staffs in Conference USA. The team ranks second in the conference in ERA (2.20) and hits allowed (108). In addition, UAB’s weekend starting rotation of junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna, senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard, and redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Johnny Lieske rank 1, 5, 7 in ERA, respectively.
From the plate, UAB leads the conference in sacrifice bunts (17), a staple in head coach Brian Shoop’s game plan. The team also owns the second-best on-base percentage (.407) in the 13-team league.
