BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team will travel to Jonesboro, Ark. this weekend for a three-game series with Arkansas State that starts Friday. First pitch of game one is schedule for 6 p.m. CT at Tomlinson Stadium.

Ussery's Late Homer Lifts UAB Over Arkansas State, 5-3
In a game that featured mostly small-ball types of plays, Ryan's Ussery's two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the UAB baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday night. The Blazers close the Auburn Tournament on Sunday at 3 p.m.CT against the host Tigers.
Last Meeting: In the only previous meeting between these two teams, the Blazers were able to come away with a 5-3 win over the Red Wolves at the Auburn Tournament to kickoff the 2011 season. A tie game, 3-3, heading to the eighth inning, Ryan Ussery hit a two-run blast to straight-away center field for UAB to break open the game.
UAB Scouting Report
UAB is coming off a two-game midweek series sweep of visiting Saint Joseph's. The Blazers used a strong offensive performance to take game one and relied on solid pitching to win game two.
In the first game, the Blazers bats woke up to the tune of 11 runs on 17 hits, both season highs. John Frost, Tyler Mims, and Jacob German each recorded three hits while three other Blazers managed multiple hits in the game. German led the team with four RBI. UAB pitchers allowed only three hits and struck out a season-high 13 batters.
Four Blazer pitchers combined to surrender just one run on five hits and one walk. German, who came on in relief of starter Sam Kelley in the fifth inning, pitched 2.2 innings of no-hit, no-walk ball to pick up the win. Matt Morse led the Blazers offensively, going 2-for-3 with a RBI and two stolen bases in his first game of the season.
Tanner Bryant will get the nod for the series opener on Friday. Bryant was roughed up in his last outing at Georgia, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. Prior to that start, Bryant had surrendered just one run in two starts spanning 9.2 innings with 11 strikeouts.
James Naile will be on the mound for the Blazers in game two. Naile took a loss in his outing at Georgia last weekend, giving up six runs on four hits and four walks. He had allowed only two runs going into the fifth inning before a bases-clearing triple by the Bulldogs ended his afternoon. Despite the rough outing, Naile still comes in with a 3.86 ERA which is tops on the team among players with at least 10 innings pitched.
Arkansas State Scouting Report
Arkansas State comes in with an 8-4 overall record but having lost three of its lastfive games. Sam Houston State took two of three from the Red Wolves last weekend, outscoring Arkansas State 22-12. The Red Wolves rebounded from theseries loss by blanking UT-Martin 9-0 on Tuesday.
Six Arkansas State pitchers combined to pitch the shut out of UT-Martin, allowing just three hits and facing just one batter over the minimum. The pitching staff didn't walk a batter and recorded 11 strikeouts on the night.
Bradley Wallace, who will start Sunday's game, was the starter against UT-Martin and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Chandler Hawkins, who will start for the Red Wolves on Saturday, came on inrelief of Wallace and pitched two innings surrendering no hits and striking out one.
Logan Uxa leas the ASU offense, hitting .400 with 10 runs scored, six doubles, one home run, and 10 RBI.
UAB had its best offensive output of the season in Tuesday's 11-3 win over Saint Joseph's. The Blazers set new season highs in runs scored (11), hits (17), and RBIs (9). Frost scored a new season individual high three runs while German picked up a season high four RBI. Frost, Mims and German all tied career highs with three hits apiece.
Staff Strikes Out 13
In Tuesday's 11-3 victory vs. Saint Joseph's, four pitchers combined to strikeout a season-high 13 batters. The 13 punch outs marked the most by a Blazer staff since recording 15 Ks vs. Houston on April 27, 2012.
Prinzing Getting On Base
Ryan Prinzing has reached base in nine consecutive games, which is a season high for a Blazers' hitter. Prinzing leads the Blazers in doubles (3), on-base percentage (.460), and hit by pitches (5). He is second on the team in batting average (.325) and third in walks (5).
Closing The Game
UAB has recorded five saves as a team so far this season, tied with Tulane for the most in Conference USA. Four different pitchers have recorded a save this season, led by Cameron Rose who has recorded two saves on the year.
Playing The Close Ones
UAB is 5-1 in games decided by two runs or fewer this year, going 3-1 in 1-run games and 2-0 in 2-run contests. Last season, the Blazers posted an impressive 13-5 record in games decided by a single run.
