BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team will host Middle Tennessee in its first Conference USA three-game series of the 2014 season. UAB and Middle Tennessee will kickoff the three-game set on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Regions Field. The two teams are scheduled to meet at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Conference USA Opener
Friday night’s contest marks the Blazers’ first Conference USA matchup of the 2014 season. UAB is 10-8 all-time in Conference USA openers and 3-4 under head coach Brian Shoop. The Green and Gold have not won a conference opener in two years since they opened up league play with a 3-2 victory against Marshall on March 25, 2011.

Blazers Bash Alabama State
The UAB baseball team scored a season-best 13 runs en route to a 13-1 victory at Alabama State on Wednesday, March 5. It marked the first time UAB scored at least 13 runs since 2012. The Blazers also had 16 hits against Alabama State, their first time with at least 15 hits in a game since April 13, 2013 versus Memphis.

Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Ben Bullard, in his second start of the 2014 season, allowed one earned run, scattered four hits, struck out five, and did not walk any in four innings pitched. Bullard, who earned his first victory of the year, is now four strikeouts shy of fourth on the UAB all-time career strikeouts list. The Decatur, Ala. native also is tied for eighth in program history in career wins (16).

Redshirt junior Tyler Mims and sophomores Evan Peterson, Adam Smith, and Mitch Williams each contributed at least two RBI on the night. The quartet all set career-highs for runs batted in at Alabama State.

Quality Start To 2014
Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard is one of 43 players in the nation to have three quality starts in their first three starts of the 2014 season. A quality start is defined as a game in which a starting pitcher goes at least 6.0 innings and permits no more than three earned runs.

Mallard has gone at least 7.0 innings in each of his three starts in 2014. In addition, he has yet to surrender a run for the season.
