BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team will hit the road for a mid-week contest against Alabama State on Tuesday night. It marks the squad’s third road game of the 2014 season. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
Blazers Take Fourth Consecutive Series
For the first time since the 2011 campaign, the UAB baseball team has won four straight three-game series, dating back to the Tulane series of 2013. UAB opened 2014 with sweeps against UT-Martin and Youngstown State, before taking two of three contests against Arkansas State.
Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard threw seven scoreless innings for his third victory of the season on Friday, Feb. 28 against the Red Wolves. Junior outfielder Chase Davis went 4-for-4 on Saturday, March 1 to clinch the series against Arkansas State.
Among The Best In Conference USA
The UAB baseball team ranks up with the top teams in Conference USA in the latest statistical rankings. As a team, the Blazers rank in the top three of more than 10 categories. Individually, five members of the team lead the league in at least one category.
UAB currently sports one of the best pitching staffs in Conference USA. The team ranks second in the conference in ERA (2.19) and batters struck out (108). In addition, UAB’s weekend starting rotation of senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard, redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Johnny Lieske, and junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna rank 1, 3, 4 in ERA.
From the plate, UAB leads the conference in sacrifice bunts (10), a staple in head coach Brian Shoop’s game plan. The team also owns the second-best on-base percentage (.416) in the 13-team league.
