BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team travels to Athens, Ga. this weekend for a three-game series against the Georgia Bulldogs. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. CT at Foley Field.

UAB Scouting Report
>> The Blazers have been off since last weekend, after taking two of three at home against Xavier to sit at 4-4 overall for the season. UAB rebounded last week after dropping a pair of midweek games to Jacksonville State before nearly sweeping the Musketeers, falling in the series finale.
>> UAB has played seven of its first eight games at home and captured two of three in each home weekend series against Southern Illinois and Xavier.
>> The Blazers’ bats woke up against Xavier, hitting .286 as a team, to improve the season average to .235. John Frost was a key contributor at the dish going 6-for-11 (.636) for the series, upping his season batting clip to .333 for the year.
>> Sophomore Chase Davis has also been a spark for the UAB offense at the top of the order. The center fielder ranks second in Conference USA in hits (12) and on-base percentage (.486) and his team-best batting average of .400 sits third in the league.
>> On the mound, UAB sports a team ERA of 3.68 and has collected 56 total strikeouts in 71 innings.
>> The Friday and Saturday night combo of RHP Tanner Bryant and RHP James Naile have done a solid job early on in 2013 as the duo has collected three of UAB’s four wins. Bryant’s 0.93 ERA ranks sixth in Conference USA, while Naile is one of eight pitchers in the conference to collect two or more victories this season.
>> Out of the bullpen, RHP Chase Mallard has been go-to arm, totaling nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings over three appearances and surrendering just one earned run. Mallard is one of four different UAB pitchers to earn a save on the season.
Georgia Scouting Report
>> Georgia has struggled in the early goings of the 2013 season, sitting at 2-6. The Bulldogs most recently dropped two of three at home to Belmont last weekend and fell 10-7 in a midweek clash with Georgia State.
>> As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting .266 on the season with 11 doubles and six home runs. Five different UGA batters have hit one over the fence, led by freshman catcher Zack Bowers with two. Nelson Ward leads the Bulldogs in batting average, hitting .353 on the season.
>> The Georgia pitching staff has been off to a rocky start, owning a team ERA of 5.25 with 65 strikeouts and 37 walks in 72 innings. Friday night starter, RHP Sean McLaughlin, has worked nine innings this season over two starts with 11 strikeouts. The righty has only allowed six hits and holding the opposition to a .200 batting average.
Shut Down Relief
Blazers’ pitchers have allowed nine runs to score after the fourth inning this season. Eight of the nine runs allowed came in two games, the first (3) and third (5) games against Xavier.
Picking Up From Where He Left Off
Ivan De Jesus returned as UAB’s top hitter from a season ago, registering a .294 batting average along with a team-best 70 hits, four triples and 12 stolen bases. This season, De Jesus has recorded a hit in seven of the team’s first eight games building a .310 batting average while driving in a team-high six runs. Five of his RBI have come with two outs.
Prinzing Gets Plunked
UAB is tied for first in C-USA in being hit by pitches with 11. Nearly have of those team plunks have been registered by Ryan Prinzing who has been hit a league-best five times. In addition, Prinzing ranks seventh in the conference with an on-base percentage of .452.
Playing The Close Ones
UAB is 4-1 in games decided by two runs or fewer this year, going 2-1 in 1-run games and 2-0 in 2-run contests. Last season, the Blazers posted an impressive 13-5 record in games decided by a single run.
Stuck On Four
Through the first eight games of the season, the Blazers have yet to score more than four runs in a game. UAB has scored exactly four runs five times, including each of the last four games.
Web Gem Wes
Middle infielder Wes Kent has done a great job with the glove in his sophomore season, seeing time at both second base and shortstop. Kent is one of 10 players in C-USA with a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 and ranks third in the league with 26 assists.
Chase Gets On Base

In all four of UAB’s wins this season, a different pitcher has recorded a save. The Blazers, which top C-USA in saves, have had the following pitchers close the door in the ninth: RHP Cameron Rose, RHP Chase Mallard, RHP Adam Lau and LHP Dylan Munger.
