BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team will take on crosstown-foe Samford in a mid-week contest on Wednesday, Feb. 26. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. 

Blazers Improve To 8-0 After Three-Game Sweep 
UAB recorded its second straight three-game sweep against Youngstown State. With its three victories against Youngstown State, UAB improved to 8-0 on the 2014 season. It marked the squad’s best start to a season since 2003 when the team opened the year with a program-record 13 wins.

On Friday, Feb. 21, freshman left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery sealed the 4-2 victory with his third save of 2014. Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard and sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller combined for a one-hit shutout on Saturday, Feb. 22, delivering head coach Brian Shoop his 900th win of his coaching career. Juniors Chase Davis and Jeff Schalk each knocked in two runs on Sunday, Feb. 23 to put a stamp on the sweep.

Mallard Honored By Conference USA Two Weeks In-A-Row
For the second straight week, UAB senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, Feb. 24. Mallard became the first member of the UAB baseball program to earn Conference USA Pitcher of the Week in consecutive weeks.

The Cullman, Ala. native combined for a one-hit shutout with sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Youngstown State. Mallard went 7.1 innings, allowing just one hit, struck out nine, and walked one. The senior pitcher went 16 consecutive innings, dating back to May 22, 2013, before surrendering a hit.

On the season, Mallard owns a 2-0 mark and 0.00 ERA. He has allowed one hit, struck out 22, and walked two in 14.1 innings pitched in 2014. Mallard ranks first in Conference USA in eight different pitching catego­ries, as well.
