Mallard Named C-USA Pitcher Of The Week

Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard has struck out 22 batters, while only walking two, in 2014.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second straight week, UAB senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Mallard became the first member of the UAB baseball program to earn Conference USA Pitcher of the Week in consecutive weeks.

The Cullman, Ala. native combined for a one-hit shutout with sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Youngstown State. Mallard went 7.1 innings, allowing just one hit, struck out nine, and walked one. The senior pitcher went 16 consecutive innings, dating back to May 22, 2013, before surrendering a hit.

On the season, Mallard owns a 2-0 mark and 0.00 ERA. He has allowed one hit, struck out 22, and walked two in 14.1 innings pitched in 2014.

Mallard and the UAB baseball team are back in action on Wednesday afternoon at Samford. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
