BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team will host Youngstown State in a three-game set this weekend at Regions Field, beginning on Friday. Friday's contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games will both start at 1 p.m.
Green And Gold Take Two Against Alabama A&M
In its first two mid-week games of the 2014 campaign, the UAB baseball team defeated Alabama A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and Wednesday, Feb. 19. UAB exploded for a 10-3 win on Tuesday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala., before returning to Regions Field on Wednesday night and rallying for a 9-6 victory. With the two wins, the squad improved to 5-0 on the year, its best start to a season since 2004.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum was 2-for-6 with three RBI against Alabama A&M. On Wednesday night, he plated two runs, a career-best. Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Ben Bullard also made his first appearance on the mound since 2012 against the Bulldogs. Bullard moved into sixth place on the UAB career strikeouts list, as he has now fanned 164 batters.
Shoop Approaches Milestone
UAB head coach Brian Shoop ranks among the top current head coaches in NCAA Division I baseball. With an all-time coaching mark of 893-512-1 heading into the 2014 season, Shoop ranks in the top 30 of the winningest active coaches by percentage and victories.
The eighth-year skipper ranks 21st among active Division I head coaches in victories. Shoop sports a .635 winning percentage in his 24 years of coaching, which ranks 26th.
Heading into this weekend's series, Shoop is one victory shy of his 200th coaching win of his UAB coaching career. In addition, Shoop is also two victories away from his 900th coaching win of his all-time coaching career.
