BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard was named one of the Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week for his performance against UT-Martin on Friday, Feb. 14, as announced on Monday by Collegiate Baseball.
Mallard became the first Blazer to earn National Player of the Week accolades since Ben Bullard in March 2012. Earlier today, Mallard was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week. The senior right-handed pitcher had a career-night as the UAB baseball team defeated UT-Martin, 5-0, in its season-opener. In the squad's first-ever game at Regions Field, Mallard did not yield a hit, struck out 13, and walked one in seven innings of work.
The Cullman, Ala. native combined with freshman left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery for a one-hitter on Friday night. Mallard set a career-high with 13 strikeouts on the night, which all were swinging. He was two shy of the UAB program record, as well. In addition, Mallard became the first Blazer to record at least 10 strikeouts in a game since Alex Luna fanned 10 against Alabama State on April 24, 2013.
The UAB baseball team returns to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Alabama A&M. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
