BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ryan Ruggles of Sheffield, Ala. will join the UAB baseball program for the 2015 season, head coach Brian Shoop announced on Friday. Ruggles, a left-handed pitcher, has compiled 19 victories on the mound at Sheffield High School.
"Ryan is an in-state left-handed pitcher with tremendous upside," stated Shoop. "He has attended our camps for three years now and we have watched his steady improvement."
Ruggles, a member of the Sheffield High School varsity team since eighth grade, owns a 19-12 record in 178 innings pitched. The left-handed pitcher has fanned 224 batters in his career at Sheffield High School.
"His 6-3 frame and long loose delivery make for unlimited potential," added Shoop. "He has played for head coach Chuck Smith, who has done a tremendous job of teaching Ryan and developing him at Sheffield High School. One more year under Coach Smith will have Ryan ready to compete in Conference USA."
As a junior, Ruggles went 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA. Ruggles struck out 90 in 60.2 innings pitched. For his efforts on the mound, he was an honorable mention on the Alabama Class 1A Region 3A All-Area Team.
"Ryan is a great student who wants to major in industrial distribution, so UAB is a great match for Ryan's academic goals," concluded Shoop. "He also is an exceptional young man from a great family, so he is exactly the type of young man we want in our program. We couldn't be more excited to welcome Ryan to the UAB Baseball family."
