HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB baseball team fell in Sunday’s matinee against No. 22 Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles shutout the Blazers 8-0 as UAB fell to 23-29 this year and 8-19 in Conference USA. USM secured the C-USA regular season title with the win, improved to 40-12 and 22-5 in conference.

Austin Thomas quieted an early effort by the Golden Eagles. USM nearly scored in the first frame as the bases were loaded but the UAB starter picked up a big strikeout to end the opening frame.

The Blazers endured some tough luck in the top of the third. Jim Jeffries, making his second career start, hit a ball hard up the middle that was snagged out of the air on a diving effort. Then for the final out of the frame, Pierce Ressmeyer singled to right field and after a bobble by the outfielder, Ressmeyer pushed for second base but was narrowly thrown out on the play. The Green & Gold would have had a pair of runners in scoring position had the senior designated hitter been safe on the play.

Southern Miss would take advantage of a throwing error on a pickoff attempt in the bottom of the third inning to score the first run. The Golden Eagles would add-on one more with a bases loaded single a few batters after that to hold an early 2-0 advantage.

The lead was pushed to 3-0 on a fifth inning single with a pair of runners aboard. The Blazer bats were stifled after that as they had one hit over the final four frames. USM would tack on runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make it 8-0.

The Golden Eagles outhit UAB 10-5 while committing one error to the Blazers two.

Thomas was charged with the loss and is now 2-2 this year. The senior threw 4.1 innings allowing three runs, four hits, five walks, and striking out four.

Taylor Braley earned the victory to move to 5-2. He tossed seven-plus shutout innings while also going 1-for-2 at the plate and scoring once to help out his own cause serving as the clean-up hitter. Braley gave up four hits, one walk, and struck out seven batters.

Zack Davis and Colton Schultz were the only UAB hitter to reach base twice. Davis was 1-for-2 with a double and also reached on a walk. The freshman right fielder also had a quality jumping snag in the field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Schultz added a 1-for-3 day and was hit by a pitch.

Brewer Hicklen singled in his final at-bat in the ninth inning to extend his on-base streak to 38 straight games. He finished the day 1-for-4.

UAB’s final series of the year begins Thursday night against Rice. The Blazers and Owls will play at 6:30 p.m. the first two nights at Young Memorial Field before wrapping up with Senior Day on Saturday. Senior festivities will begin roughly 20 minutes before first pitch which is set for 1 p.m.
