Greenville, N.C. - UAB dropped game two of its C-USA series against East Carolina on Saturday, as the Pirates outlasted the Blazers 13-1 in front of 2,815 at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Blazers drop to 18-33 on the season with the defeat, and 5-15 in conference play. ECU has now won three in a row, and moves to 31-20 on the year and 9-11 in league games.
Jim Crew took the hill for UAB, but failed to build on his two straight complete games in his last two outings. The sophomore struggled from the onset, going only 2.1 innings and allowing four earned runs. Lyle Northington followed Crew, throwing 2.1 frames of his own. Mitch Thorn and Kyle Roberson combined to finish the contest, hurling the final 3.1 innings.
The Green and Gold offense failed to muster any attack against ECU starter Shane Matthews, who went seven strong and allowed only four hits to pick up his fifth win of the year. Ryne Lovdahl was the lone Blazer to pick up two hits on the day, finishing 2-for-4 with a double. Jacob Legg had the lone RBI, singling home Donnie Muth in the top of the ninth.
ECU wasted no time getting ahead, as it scored four runs in its first three trips to the plate. Things continued to snowball for the Blazers, as the Pirates scored nine runs in the middle innings to take a commanding 13-0 lead.
UAB pushed across one run in the ninth, as Donnie Muth reached advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Legg capitalized, ripping a single to right center to score Muth and make it 13-1 ECU.
The finale is set for Sunday at noon ET, as freshman Drew Murray heads to the hill in search of his second straight win as a Sunday starter. For complete postgame coverage, check www.uabsports.com.
