MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Alabama State scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to break the contest open and defeat the UAB baseball team, 7-1, on Tuesday evening at the Wheeling-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Alabama State (27-18) started the scoring on the day when Dillon Cooper connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the second.
UAB (16-25) was held in check offensively by Hornets' starter Anthony Riccardi through the first six innings. Finally in the seventh, UAB broke through when Tanner Bryant and Tyler Mims each singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Head coach Brian Shoop went to his bench and called on Chase Davis to pinch hit, who brought home what proved to be the lone run of the night for the Green and Gold on a fielder's choice.
Riccardi would end the seventh-inning threat with a strikeout, as the Hornets led by a slim 2-1 margin.
In the last of the seventh frame, ASU exploded for five runs off five hits and was assisted by a pair of Blazer errors to take a commanding 7-1 advantage and round out the scoring for the contest. Emmanuel Marrero's two-run single was the key hit in the frame for the home Hornets.
Riccardi (3-5) earned the victory for the Hornets, working the first seven innings and scattering seven hits and did not walk a batter and recorded one strikeout.
Jacob German (2-1) suffered the loss in his first start of the season for the Blazers. The righty went the first four frames, giving up two runs, both earned on three hits with three strikeouts.
Bryant and Mims led the Blazers, each recording a pair of hits. In the loss, John Frost's 20-game hit streak came to an end, the longest by any Blazer under Shoop at UAB.
Castro and Marrero combined to go 6-for-8 with three runs scored and four RBI for the ASU offense.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
