ORLANDO, Fla. - In a contest that lasted just over four hours, the UAB baseball team dropped a rain soaked game one of a Conference USA series against Central Florida 9-0. The Blazers failed to pick up their first league win in 2006, and fall to 13-26 on the season.
UCF starter Tim Bascom and Brett Bordwine combined to limit the Blazers to only five hits on the evening. Danny Sawyer went 1-for-3 in the contest, smashing his team leading 15th double of the season
Jacob Legg took the hill for UAB, but failed to repeat his dominating performance against Rice two weekends ago. Legg threw two innings, allowing five earned while striking out one. Derek Hanks came in to toss four innings in relief; a career high for the freshman from Saraland, Ala. Ben Styes hurled the final two innings for UAB.
UCF (22-19, 5-4 C-USA) crossed home plate first, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff bunt single and stolen base helped manufacture a run for the Golden Knights as they took the early 1-0 lead.
The Golden Knights struck again in the second, plating two to push the advantage to 3-0. Legg retired the first two hitters of the frame, but two walks and two hits later UCF had rallied to score two runs.
Bascom kept the Blazers in check early, striking out three hitters and escaping a jam in the top half of the second. After Levi Patmon reached on an error, Ryne Lovdahl's single put two runners on with two outs for UAB. Bascom worked out of it, retiring Billy Lichtner to end the threat.
Wasting no time, UCF continued to attack, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to six. Dave DiNatale hit a three-run home run to highlight the scoring.
Game two of this three-game set will be tomorrow at 6:30 ET. Jim Crew will take the mound for the Blazers. Follow the game online with gametracker, available at the UCF athletics website.
