Alabama Rallies To Defeat UAB 5-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Center fielder Brandon Belcher hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to lift Alabama to a 5-4 victory over UAB in baseball action Wednesday evening at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

The Tide began the inning down 4-2. Catcher Charlie Lyons got an infield single to start the rally. Second baseman Allen Rice followed with a single up the middle. Belcher then gave the Crimson Tide the lead for good.

Tide reliever Brent Carter (5-3) picked up the win for Alabama (22-13, 4-8 Southeastern Conference) after working three and two-thirds shut-out innings and allowing only one hit. He had six strikeouts without issuing a walk. Tide starter Andrew Walker pitched three and one-third innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

Blazer starter Adam Price (2-5) took the loss for UAB (14-18, 2-9 Conference USA) after pitching six and two-thirds innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Alabama struck first in the top of the second inning when, with two outs, Lyons singled to right center field, scoring first baseman Zac Welch and designated hitter Carlos Sosa. The Crimson Tide led 2-0.

UAB answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning when first baseman Daniel Hill doubled to left center field, scoring shortstop Josh Miljavac.

The Blazers tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning when right fielder Cole Helms singled to left field, scoring center fielder Sam Clark.

UAB took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hill doubled to right center field, scoring Miljavac and Helms.

Hill finished the night going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.



UAB out-hit Alabama 12-11 and left 12 runners on base to Alabama's 10.

The Blazers return to Young Memorial Field for a three-game C-USA series against seventh-ranked Tulane Friday-Sunday. Friday, the teams meet at 7 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
