The UAB baseball team plated the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on for a 6-5 win against Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. With the victory, UAB snapped Southern Miss' six-game win streak in the series between the two programs and evened the weekend three-game set.

"I am very proud of them," head coach Brian Shoop said. "When you play a 56-game Division I schedule where everyone is good, you are going to have some really disappointing losses, like we did last night. That one hurt. That one really stung because we felt like we let a win get away. On top of a very painful loss last night, we got down 3-0 today. I was very proud of the guys to battle back. That's a heck of a win for our club. I am very proud of them."

UAB (24-11, 10-5) was able to score the game-winner in the eighth inning. Sophomore catcher Mitch Williams singled to lead off the inning and then senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus was plunked by a pitch. Redshirt junior infielder Matt Morse sacrificed himself to move the runners over. After sophomore infielder Adam Smith was hit by a pitch, junior outfielder Chase Davis came to the plate. With the bases loaded, Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center field to seal the game for the Blazers.

Junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna did not have his best stuff on Saturday against Southern Miss (20-16, 9-5). Luna went 5.2 innings, gave up five earned runs, allowed nine hits, struck out two, and walked five. Freshman left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery relieved Luna in the sixth. The Pelham, Ala. native threw a near perfect 3.1 innings, allowing only one base runner via a walk. Lowery improved his record to 4-1 on the season.

Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After earning a walk and recording a single, USM sophomore infielder Tim Lynch hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Junior designated hitter Matt Durst then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to push the first run in.

In the top of the third inning, Southern Miss would add two to its advantage. With the bases loaded, USM freshman outfielder Dylan Burdeaux hit a towering fly ball to center field. The ball would drop in for a double. Southern Miss would score two on the play, but junior first baseman Bradley Roney was caught at home.

UAB responded with a big inning in the bottom of the frame. After a walk and two singles, the bases were loaded for Davis. Davis grounded out to the Southern Miss first baseman, but scored De Jesus from third. Senior designated hitter Ryan Prinzing would then single to right field, adding two more to knot the score. After redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum reached on an error, there were runners on second and third for junior first baseman Jeff Schalk. Schalk hit his team-leading fifth sacrifice fly of the year to push UAB ahead 4-3.

The Blazers would tack on one more in the fifth. With one out and Prinzing on first base, Gum laced a double to the warning track in center field. Prinzing would come all the way around to give the Green and Gold a 5-3 edge.

In the sixth, Southern Miss would tie things back up. Luna gave up three consecutive singles to load the bases. Durst grounded into a double play up the middle for Southern Miss, but was able to plate one. Luna was replaced by Lowery after. Lowery let one get away from him, allowing a run to score via a wild pitch. The Pelham, Ala. native was dialed in after that, striking out junior outfielder Mason Robbins for the final out of the inning.

Southern Miss sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake Winston was credited with the loss after giving up the game winning run in the eighth.

The Conference USA three-game series will be decided on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. The contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
