BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The UAB baseball team suffered a 7-2 loss to in-state foe Troy on Tuesday night at Regions Field. With the setback, UAB snapped its six-game winning streak against Troy.

“Baseball is a humbling game,” head coach Brian Shoop said. “As soon as you start feeling good about yourself, tonight happens. The kids were feeling pretty good about themselves, then the first three innings tonight come around and remind you that this is a very challenging game.”

Troy junior right-handed pitcher Chase Davidson, in his first appearance as a Trojan, went 6.0 innings, allowing only one hit, struck out four, and walked three. UAB (19-10, 6-3) was finally able to come through for a run in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not gain enough ground.

Senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus led the Blazers on the night with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. De Jesus recorded his eighth RBI of the season on a single up the middle in the eighth. Redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims, in his first game since Saturday, March 22, registered an RBI against the Trojans, as well.

“He (Tyler Mims) both threw a guy out and got a hit for us,” commented Shoop. “It is good to get him back in the mix.”

Troy (16-13, 4-4) broke through early, scoring runs in the first, second, and third innings. The Trojans plated two runs off UAB redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Sam Kelley in the first via a two RBI double to right center from Troy senior first baseman Matt Howard.

In the second, Troy tallied another run. After putting runs on first and second, Kelley was replaced by senior left-handed pitcher Turner Lee. Lee hit the first batter he saw, forced a pop-up, then allowed a runner to cross home after a wild pitch.

The visitors did the most damage in the third inning. Troy redshirt junior outfielder David Hall struck out swinging, but advanced after a wild pitch from Lee. After a Troy groundout, consecutive singles allowed Hall to reach home. Trojans junior catcher Adam Tewksbury then hit a triple down the left field line to put two more on the board, giving the Trojans a 6-0 advantage.

Once Davidson exited in the seventh inning, UAB was able to put together some offense. After allowing another run in the top of the seventh, UAB plated its first run in the bottom of the eighth. With men on first and second and two outs, De Jesus recorded his second base-knock of the night, to score sophomore infielder Adam Smith. In the ninth, Mims singled to right field to plate redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum.

UAB will be back in action when it returns to Conference USA play at Louisiana Tech on Friday, April 4. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. in Ruston, La.
