GREENVILLE, N.C. ---- East Carolina's Tyler Joyner fired a complete game four-hitter as the UAB baseball team fell 12-2 on Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Blazers (17-11, 2-3 C-USA) will look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday against the 30th-ranked Pirates (18-8, 3-2). First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
"It was just one of those days," head coach Brian Shoop said. "It was a bad day in every respect. The only good thing about today, is that it's over and thankfully it is just one out of 56 (games) and we get to play again tomorrow. As bad as today was, I expect us to play real well tomorrow."
Tyler Mims was the main bright spot in the UAB lineup. In his first collegiate start in the outfield, Mims finished 2-for-3 with an RBI out of the fifth slot in the lineup.
The loss was dealt to righty Ben Bullard (2-3) as the UAB defense faltered behind him. Bullard went the first 5.0 innings and gave up seven runs off seven hits. Of those seven runs, only two were earned and he added four strikeouts and no walks to his final line.
After Bullard was lifted entering the sixth, righty Alex Luna made his college debut out of the bullpen. Luna tossed the sixth and seventh frames, giving up only one hit and walking a batter.
ECU starter, Joyner, was effective throughout the game's entirety. The southpaw fired his first career complete game and set a personal best with eight strikeouts. He scattered four hits and only one of the two runs he surrendered was earned.
