BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second night in a row the UAB Blazers saw a ninth inning lead disappear as the Samford Bulldogs got three runs home in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 5-4 come from behind victory at Joe Lee Griffin Field Wednesday night. Senior outfielder J.R. Bond and designated hitter Steven Turner each hit their third home runs of the season in the game.
UAB senior right-hander Grant Addison (0-1) was tabbed with the loss, while Samford's Doug Denson (1-1) threw 2.0 innings of relief to earn the win. The UAB pitching staff walked a total of 11 batters in the game and hit two others.
Senior outfielder Levi Patmon was 2-for-3 in the game, while sophomore outfielder Brint Hardy was 2-for-4. Sophomore second baseman Allen Aubin went 2-for-4 as did Bond.
Samford was led offensively by catcher Luke Peavy who was 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Patmon began the game with a leadoff single to center field and came in to score the game first run on a sacrifice fly by Lovdahl to take an early 1-0 lead.
The two teams went scoreless in the second and third but in the fourth, UAB added another run on as Bond homered to deep center field to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, again it was Patmon starting a Blazer rally, reaching on a single before coming in to score and give UAB a 3-0 lead on a single up the middle by Lovdahl.
UAB extended its lead to 4-0 in the seventh when Turner led off the inning and blasted the first pitch he saw high over the left field wall for a solo shot.
Samford cut the Blazer lead to two in the bottom half of the seventh when shortstop Michael Marseco reached on a single and then right fielder Bear Burnett drew a walk to put two on for catcher Luke Peavy. Peavy then drilled a shot to center field just over Bond's head to score the two lead runners and cut the UAB lead in half, 4-2.
With UAB leading by two in the ninth, Samford loaded the bases on an error, a walk and a hit batter and then got its first run of the inning home on another hit batter. With the Blazer lead cut to 4-3, another walk tied the game 4-4 and then, with the UAB infield playing in, a single by Bulldog second baseman Garrett Rice was just out of the reach of the diving Blazer shortstop Jonathan Merritt
to score the game-winning run for the 5-4 triumph.
UAB is now 12-15, while Samford improves to 14-13.
The Blazers will next be in action when they open Conference USA play against UCF on Friday at 7 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
