Winter Haven, Fla. ----- The UAB baseball team fell behind early and weren't able to recover in a 12-3 loss to 24th-ranked Indiana on Saturday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park Stadium.
Turner Lee (1-1) received the loss for the Blazers, surrendering five runs, four earned, on five hits and one walk in two innings pitched. He struck out five batters.
After Indiana (13-3) scored two runs in the first inning, Sam Travis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to cap a three run second for the Hoosiers.
UAB (9-10) got one run back in the top of the third inning. Tanner Bryant doubled to left center to leadoff the inning and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Chase Davis hit a sacrifice fly to left field a couple batters later to plate Bryant.
Cory Eller came on in relief of Lee and pitched a 1-2-3 third inning before allowing four runs in the fourth inning on three hits and two errors. Eller pitched two more innings and didn't allow another run.
UAB scored a run in the seventh and ninth innings off Bryant sacrifice flies but weren't able to keep Indiana off the board as the Hoosiers added three more runs in the eighth to finish off the Blazers.
Bryant contributed to all three of the Blazers runs on the afternoon, finishing 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.
Tyler Mims went 2-for-4 and scored two runs for the Blazers.
Kyle Hart (3-0) earned the win for Indiana, pitching five innings while allowing one run on one hit and two walks.
UAB will conclude the weekend with a matchup against Dartmouth on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT at Chain of Lakes Park Stadium.
