ATHENS, Ga. ----- The UAB baseball team suffered its second-straight setback to Georgia Saturday afternoon, 6-2.
The Blazers and Bulldogs will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Foley Field.
UAB (4-6) trailed by two runs going into the fifth before Georgia (4-6) scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to break the game open.
James Naile (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for the Blazers, allowing six runs on four hits in 4.2 innings pitched. He struck out three and walked four.
Georgia advanced a runner to third in each of the first two innings but UAB was able to get out of each inning without surrendering a run.
In the second, first baseman Tyler Mims made a diving stop and was able to toss the ball over to Naile to get the batter at first to end the inning and prevent the UGA runner from scoring.
The Bulldogs struck first, plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning. A single, walk, and an error loaded the bases for Georgia with no outs and then back-to-back sacrifice flies scored the two runs. Wes Kent made a diving catch on a line drive to end the inning and prevent another run from scoring.
Georgia added four more runs in the fifth inning, all runs being scored with two outs, which broke the game open. With the bases-loaded, Georgia's Brett DeLoach hit a three run triple off the left field wall.
"James [Naile] wasn't as good as he's been but he hung in there and competed really good for us and kept us in the game. If they don't get that bases clearing triple which was just feet from Ivan [De Jesus] being able to make that play, then it's a close game," said head coach Brian Shoop.
Ryan Prinzing followed that up with a single to right center to score Bryant. De Jesus grounded into a fielder's choice but it was enough to get Davis across home plate and cut the Bulldogs lead to 6-2.
Bryant went two-for-three on the day and scored one run for the Blazers.
UGA's Patrick Boling (1-2) pitched 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win for the Bulldogs. He allowed two hits, two walks, and had four strikeouts.
