BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The UAB baseball team suffered its first setback of the 2014 season, losing 13-5 at Samford on Wednesday afternoon. Samford exploded for 13 runs in the first three innings, giving UAB its first loss since May 23, 2013.

“You just have to tip your hats to the Samford hitters,” head Brian Shoop said. “Bullard and Lamar were encouraging. Bullard was better. That was Adam’s first college outing and it was real encouraging.”

Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Ben Bullard and redshirt freshman left-handed pitcher Adam Lamar pitched effectively in relief at Samford (3-4). After UAB (8-1) gave up 13 runs in the opening three innings, the duo came in and did not surrender a run and only allowed three hits over 4.2 innings.

Redshirt freshman infielder Matthew Furuto had a career-day, going 3-for-3 from the plate. Redshirt junior infielder Matt Morse also had multiple hits and collected an RBI on the day.

“He gives you a competitive at bat,” Shoop said of Furuto. “A lot of times it is an offensive game at this park. That’s why I picked him. He had a good night tonight.”

Samford took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two men on, redshirt junior infielder Tripp Martin hit a home run to left field to give the host Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Freshman infielder Hunter Swilling extended the Bulldog advantage to 5-0 with a two RBI double. Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Jared Watson hit an RBI single, putting the host ahead 6-0.

Redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Sam Kelley started on the mound for the Blazers, surrendering six runs in 0.2 innings of work. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ronnie Smith came in in relief and got UAB out of the jam in the first inning.

The Bulldogs pushed ahead in the bottom of third inning with seven additional runs. Samford knocked four extra-base hits, including back-to-back home runs. Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Ben Bullard replaced Smith in the third; getting the first two batters he faced out.

UAB finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. Sophomore infielder Adam Smith clubbed an RBI single just over the outstretched arms of the Samford second baseman, plating classmate Mitch Williams.

In the sixth inning, UAB plated four runs. Junior outfielder Jeff Schalk hit an RBI single to right field, scoring senior designated hitter Ryan Prinzing. Redshirt freshman infielder Jacob Armstrong grounded out to third baseman, but scored redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum. Sophomore catcher Mitch Williams and Morse then each hit an RBI single, cutting the Samford lead to 13-5.

The UAB baseball team will be back in action on Friday afternoon when it opens its three game series against Arkansas State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Regions Field.
