DOTHAN, Ala. -- With UAB showing a flair for the dramatic with two consecutive late-inning rallies, Troy gave them some of their own medicine, scoring three late runs to defeat the Blazers 8-7 in game two of a doubleheader at the Wiregrass Classic.
This loss drops UAB to 4-2 on the season. Brandon Flaherty, the game one bullpen savior for head coach Larry Giangrosso's squad was saddled with the loss in game two. The right hander surrendered a late lead, unable to close the door against the Trojans.
Jim Crew started the game for the Blazers, going six strong innings and staking the Blazers to a 3-1 lead. The sophomore hurler from Birmingham, Ala., scattered two hits and struck out four to continue his strong start to the 2006 campaign. The bullpen faltered down the stretch for UAB, allowing seven runs and letting the Trojans escape with the victory.
The Blazer bats exploded in game two of the day, pounding out 15 hits. John Wayne Donahue turned in a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 on the day with two RBIs. Jorge Gutierrez had three hits for the Blazers. Danny Sawyer, Zac Ward and Billy Lichtner all contributed two hits to the effort.
Troy jumped out to a 1-0 margin, but from there the UAB bats would hammer their way into the lead. The Blazers opened the fourth inning with Sawyer blasting a solo home run down the left line to tie the game at 1. Just one at bat later, Ward followed suit, sending a fly ball deep into the night and giving UAB its first lead of the game. Three consecutive singles followed, with Lichtner knocking home the 3rd run with his hit to left center to bump the lead to 3-1.
The Trojans tied the game and eventually took a 5-3 lead into the ninth inning before the Blazer bats went to work to regain the advantage. After two quick outs, J.R. Bond doubled to right center to start things off. Sawyer promptly singled him home to cut the lead to 5-4. After a single by Ward, Donahue proved to be clutch again, lacing a double to left center to bring home two runs. Gutierrez joined in the action, doubling home Donahue to give UAB its last lead of the night.
