BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Senior right-handed pitcher Chase Mallard and sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller combined for a one-hitter to lead the UAB baseball team to a 4-0 victory against Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at Regions Field. With the victory, UAB head coach Brian Shoop collected his 900th win of his coaching career.

“You know it is a longevity thing,” said Shoop. “It means you have been coaching for a long time. It means you have had really good players. It means you have really good assistant coaches. I probably get too much credit for the wins. Wins are a team and program award, not an individual award. I’m very aware of that.”

For the second straight start, Mallard was dominant on the mound. Dating back to last spring, Mallard went 16 consecutive innings without surrendering a hit. The Cullman, Ala. native also struck out nine while only walking one in 7.1 innings of service.

“Wow, to start off the year with 14 consecutive no-hit innings,” added Shoop. “Mallard was fantastic.”

Eller kept the one-hitter intact, pitching the final 1.2 innings. The Niceville, Fla. native struck out one and did not allow a batter to reach base against Youngstown State (0-2, 0-0).

Senior designated hitter Ryan Prinzing led UAB (7-0, 0-0) with two RBI on the day. Redshirt junior infielder Matt Morse and redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum each knocked in a run, as well.

The Blazers broke through early, scoring one run in the first inning. Prinzing singled through the left side of the infield to plate junior outfielder Chase Davis, giving UAB a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, UAB struck again. Prinzing hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring sophomore infielder Adam Smith. Gum then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Davis, and pushing the home team ahead 3-0.

One inning later, the squad put the final run of the day on the scoreboard. Morse hit an RBI single to plate redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims for the fourth run against the Penguins.

UAB and Youngstown State will play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Regions Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
