BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team used a three-run fourth inning to score a 4-2 win on Friday afternoon against Youngstown State at Regions Field. With the victory, head coach Brian Shoop collected his 200th win of his UAB coaching career.
“I actually didn’t even know that until after the game,” said Shoop. “They were all shaking my hand and giving me the ball. It just means I’m getting old.”
Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Johnny Lieske collected his first win on the mound in a Green and Gold uniform on Friday. Lieske went 5.0 innings, allowed two unearned runs, and struck out two.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Thomas Lowery pitched the final four innings, surrendering only one hit en route to his third save of the season. Lowery fanned a career-high four batters against Youngstown State.
“We are trying to get the ball into Lowery’s hands, as a freshman,” added Shoop. “He had a great fall for us and great winter. That’s already three saves out of six games. When we got the ball in his hands, we were in pretty good shape at that point.”
The visiting-Penguins struck first, plating two runs in the second inning. The Blazers would not pack it in though, cutting Youngstown State’s lead to 2-1 in the third frame. After hitting a double to left center, sophomore infielder Adam Smith advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Youngstown State senior catcher Josh White made an errant throw down to third, allowing Smith to cross home.
In the next inning, UAB would push ahead for good. After opening the frame with his third triple of his collegiate, senior designated hitter Ryan Prinzing scored off a single hit by redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum. Junior infielder Jeff Schalk reached on a single to right field to put two men on for sophomore catcher Mitch Williams. Williams smashed a two RBI single, giving the squad a 4-2 advantage.
Following the completion of the fifth inning, Lieske handed off the ball to Lowery. The Pelham, Ala. native sealed the victory for the Blazers, only allowing two Youngstown State players to reach base in his four innings of work.
The UAB baseball team is back in action on Saturday afternoon against Youngstown State. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Regions Field.
