HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The UAB baseball team registered its first win on the road, defeating Alabama A&M, 10-3, on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, UAB has won its first four games of the season for the first time under head coach Brian Shoop.
“It is not easy to go away from home,” said Shoop. “I thought Sam Kelley was good. Adam Lau was good and very encouraging. We need him out of the bullpen. If he pitches like that, he can help us.”
Redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Sam Kelley made his first start of the 2014 season on Tuesday afternoon at Alabama A&M. Kelley threw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, striking out four, and walked two.
UAB recorded at least 10 runs for the first time since May 3, 2013 against Rice. In addition, eight Blazers were hit by pitches on the day, setting a new program record.
“They threw a lot of guy who hadn’t pitched yet,” added Shoop. “When you hit eight people that gives you a lot of chances to score.”
After four scoreless innings, the UAB baseball team broke through in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs. With the bases loaded, redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate junior outfielder Chase Davis. Redshirt freshman infielder Matthew Furuto then crossed home via wild pitch. Senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus then hit a single through the left side of the infield to score senior designated hitter Ryan Prinzing.
The Blazers added to their lead in the sixth inning. With redshirt junior infielder Matt Morse on second, Davis grounded one back to the pitcher. Alabama A&M junior left-handed pitcher Payden Khun overthrew his third baseman, allowing Morse to score. Sophomore infielder Adam Smith then crossed home as a result of a wild pitch, giving the visitors a 5-0 advantage.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Alabama A&M scored two runs off senior right-handed pitcher Cameron Rose, cutting the Blazers’ lead to 5-2.
UAB would not let the host-Bulldogs come back in so easily, scoring four more in the eighth frame. Junior first baseman Jeff Schalk reached on an error and Furuto and Prinzing scored on the play. Gum then tallied another run for the Blazers via wild pitch. Redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims hit an RBI single to give UAB a 9-2 cushion.
Alabama A&M would tally one in the bottom of the eighth inning, but UAB countered with a RBI double from sophomore catcher Mitch Williams in the top of the ninth. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Adam Lau came in for the final inning, striking out two to seal the win.
The two-game series will resume on Wednesday at Regions Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Regions Field.
