BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– The UAB baseball team defeated UT-Martin, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon to sweep the three-game set. It marked the first Blazers’ first three-game sweep since April 27-29, 2012 against Houston.

“We didn’t have a single sweep last year,” head coach Brian Shoop stated. “It is good to get one.”

Junior right-handed pitcher Alex Luna recorded the win for UAB, throwing five scoreless innings, striking out six, and did not walk one. Freshman Thomas Lowery registered his second save of the weekend, securing the sweep in the squad’s first three games at Regions Field.

“The experience was fantastic,” said Shoop. “It is an incredible place to play. Our kids love it. It’s a great fan experience and we got three wins.”

The Blazers struck early, tallying two runs in the third inning. Junior outfielder Chase Davis singled to second base, scoring redshirt junior infielder Matt Morse. Redshirt freshman infielder Matthew Furuto came up to the plate next, reached on an error, and plated sophomore infielder Adam Smith to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, UAB added to its lead. Junior first baseman Jeff Schalk launched a two-run home run over the right field fence, putting the Blazers ahead 4-0. It marked the first home run hit at Regions Field in a UAB game.

Redshirt junior Sam Kelley came on in relief of Luna in the sixth inning. Kelley allowed three runs, two of which were unearned. Sophomore Cory Eller replaced Kelley in the sixth and got the squad out of the jam.

In the bottom half of the frame, UAB got the insurance run it needed. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Griffin Gum hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Davis, making it a 5-3 game.

Eller pitched two total innings, fanning four, before handing off the ball to Lowery. The Pelham, Ala. native did not allow a run, surrendered one hit, struck out two, and walked one in 1.1 innings of work to preserve the win for the Blazers.

UAB will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon with a trip up to Huntsville, Ala. for a contest at Alabama A&M. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
