BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior outfielder Chase Davis hit a walk-off single to seal the UAB baseball team’s 3-2 victory against UT-Martin on Saturday afternoon. With the win, UAB clinched its first series at Regions Field.

“I told our kids after the eighth inning, ‘Have you looked in the stands, do you see the crowd we have here today? We are not going to let them down,’” head coach Brian Shoop said. “We were going to find a way to win this game.”

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, UAB was looking for a late rally. Junior first baseman Jeff Schalk started it off with a one-out double to right center. Senior outfielder Ivan De Jesus and redshirt junior catcher Tyler Mims each were hit by pitches, loading the bases for the Blazers.

After a UT-Martin pitching change, sophomore infielder Evan Peterson drew a walk, allowing Schalk to cross home. Redshirt junior infielder Sam Kelley then pinch-hit for sophomore infielder Adam Smith, grounding out, but scored De Jesus.

Davis then came up to bat and dropped a single into right field, plating Mims and sealing the victory for the Blazers.

“It wasn’t really pretty,” added Shoop. “But, I am proud of the guys to grind. It felt like they expected to win. A good result, not pretty, but a good result.”

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller earned the victory for the Blazers. The Niceville, Fla. native entered the game in the eighth inning and got the squad out of a jam. Eller hit his first batter to load the bases, but made up for it striking out UT Martin senior infielder Zack Malone for the third and final out.

Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Johnny Lieske started the game for UAB, going six innings, allowing one run, struck out six, and did not issue a walk. Senior right-handed pitcher Cameron Rose replaced Lieske in the seventh inning and allowed one unearned run.

De Jesus and redshirt freshman infielder Matthew Furuto each recorded multiple hits against the Skyhawks. Davis, Kelley, and Peterson each recorded their first RBI of the season, as well.

The Blazers and Skyhawks conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the downtown Birmingham ballpark.
