BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The NCAA recognized the UAB women's tennis and rifle teams with Public Recognition Awards for their achievements with the Academic Progress Rate (APR).

It is the fourth consecutive year the Blazers' women's tennis program has been cited by the NCAA for this accomplishment.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

Women's Tennis
With a 12-8 overall record in 2013, UAB's women's tennis team finished with its best mark in five seasons under first-year head coach Lisa Jackson. The Blazers finished strong with four wins in their final six matches and garnered a No. 8 seed in the Conference USA Tournament.

The women's tennis team also excelled in the classroom with eight players boasting a 3.0 GPA or higher. Among other accolades, Blazers' Rachel Daniell and Caroline Faught earned a C-USA Academic Medal (for a 3.75 GPA or higher), while Daniell was one of five league players to be named to the 2013 C-USA All-Academic Team.

Rifle
The UAB rifle team competed in nine regular season matches along with taking aim in the NCAA Sectionals, hosted by the Citadel. At Sectionals, Maegan Sisk and Briana Lott finished 24th and 25th individually, while the lone senior on the Blazers, Abi Duke, paced 31st in her final collegiate event.

As a team, the Blazers put forth their best total team score against The Citadel, totaling 2,203 points in the air rifle competition.

Beyond their success taking aim, the Blazers were on target in the classroom as well during the 2012-13 academic year. In the spring semester, the rifle team sported a team GPA of 3.1 and sports seven of the 10 student-athletes on the roster with a 3.0 GPA or higher. During the fall semester, Margaret Lueck recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA to top the Blazers.
