CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The UAB rifle team competed in the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) Championships on March 8 at the Inouye Marksmanship Center at The Citadel. It was the final event of the Blazers’ 2013-14 season.
The Blazers finished sixth in the air rifle competition with a score of 2227. North Carolina State took home the title with a score of 2322, while North Georgia (2292) and The Citadel (2282) placed second and third.
Senior Morgan Fancher eclipsed her personal best score with a tally of 570, good for 15th overall. Fellow senior Maegan Sisk shot a 569, placing her 19th in the competition. Lindsey Hill (548) and UAB student-athlete of the week Margaret Lueck (540) also posted scores.
“We accomplished a lot this year, on and off the range,” Sisk said. “We have come such a long way.”
Sisk, a native of nearby Pelham, Ala., finished the season strong at the SEARC Championships, coming up one point shy of her career best mark of 570, achieved earlier this season in an event also held at The Citadel.
As for Fancher, she set a goal of eclipsing her personal best from the initial competition of her senior season. It took until the final event of the campaign to do so, but she achieved that milestone.
The chemistry honors student will cherish the fact that she set her career best mark by five points, saving her best for last with a team-leading score of 570.
“I definitely ended my career as a Blazer on a high note,” Fancher said.
Both girls hope that the rifle team will continue to rise beyond their time serving as captains of the squad.
“We hope this program continues to prosper and develop throughout the next several years,” Sisk said.
UAB rifle will return to the range for the 2014 fall season.
