BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB student-athletes visited EPIC Elementary School and Glen Iris Elementary School on Monday to take part in Birmingham Reads 2014. This event is a city-wide celebration of reading that is a collaborative project of Better Basics and the Junior League of Birmingham.

“I got to read If You Give a Pig a Pancake today, which was one of my favorite stories when I was a child,” junior women’s golf student-athlete Jesse Lawley said. “It was so much fun!”

Birmingham Reads is a three-pronged event. Today marked the first component of this year’s annual celebration. Volunteers from throughout the community read to every kindergarten through fifth-grade class in Birmingham City Schools.

“The importance of education is vital,” said football student-athlete Nick Terrell. “Coming to show these kids that we care about them is very important for them to grow in their reading ability and education.”

In all, 16 UAB student-athletes participated in the event and each of them were able to take away a great memory of engaging the young children and getting to give them their own copy of the book that was read to them.

“We’re thankful to Better Basics, the Junior League of Birmingham, and Birmingham Reads for inviting us to participate in this event this year,” said Director of Student-Athlete Support Services and Community Relations Justin Mackey. “We look forward to continuing to grow our relationship with these organizations so we can play an even larger role in this event next year.”

In 2013, the Birmingham Reads event reached over 615 classes and distributed more than 13,000 books to students during the one day celebration. For more information on the event and to learn more about how Birmingham Reads impacts the community please visit www.betterbasics.org/birminghamreads.
