Hey Blazer fans!
What a great weekend at UAB! All week we have been trying not to get down on ourselves after going eight games without a win. Wednesday was just another thorn in our sides. We knew that if we had any hope of making it to the conference tournament we had to beat UCF.
Well, that's just what we did. With almost 50 fouls committed, 7 yellow cards, and 1 red card (which was "awarded" to our Joe Klosterman as he was trying to keep a guy from stomping on his toes) it was truly a fight to the end. Despite playing more than a third of the game a man down, we prevailed with the 2-1 result. It was a fantastic win in front of a great crowd on such a chilly night. We had fans from everywhere, including Frank Brown's "mum" from England, Carl Woszynski's mom from Indiana, Ken Tabata's parents from Texas, and hundreds of Hooligans from here in Birmingham.
After winning, we thanked the fans in appreciation of their support and we cheered together in celebration of a feeling that we hadn't felt in quite a few weeks. It seemed like we had almost grown used to losing close games, and this one-goal win reminded us that our season is far from over! We shouted and hollered all the way to the locker room where we continued to celebrate.
Saturday evening there was a Halloween/Victory party that most of the guys took part in. It was good to let loose and dress ridiculously knowing that we'd just begun, what we hope to be, a winning streak that will take us to the National Championship game on December 14th in Cary, North Carolina. This win over UCF was such a relief, and we couldn't have done it without the crazy Hooligans and other fans that withstood the cold weather, and we really appreciate all of your support!
Our focus now is completely on Memphis, who we will play on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at West Campus Field. If we look past them it may spell the end of the season for us, because we are still fighting to get into the Conference USA tournament. We've been practicing pretty tough all week with a lot of attacking-focused drills as well as practicing set plays like corner kicks and free kicks. Coach has given us a pretty good scouting report on the Tigers, and we will be in good shape come Saturday if we stick to our plans of playing quick, simple soccer across the field.
It should prove to be another tough match, so we're going to need all the help we can get!! Please do your best to come out and support us this Saturday at 2:00, and we'll do our best to bring home another win!
Until next time... Go Blazers!
