Hello everyone! My name is Wes Johnson and I am a redshirt sophomore goalkeeper on the UAB men's soccer team. Once a week throughout the men's soccer season, I will be logging on in order to shed a little light on the life of a UAB student-athlete.
The season is well underway now that we have played four games and, fortunately, this weekend we earned two great shutout victories. Our spirits were low after opening the season at the Akron University Tournament with two poor performances both resulting in losses. It took a week of hard work and focus along with a uniform decision that our season WILL improve. We prepared hard for the two games this weekend and everyone showed up to play.
After the wins last weekend, a large group of the guys went to dinner to celebrate our success together. We talked about the differences in play and gave props to several guys for their goals and assists. Prior to returning to campus, another celebration was being organized in order to surprise Johnny (Markey) for his birthday.
Both the men's and women's soccer teams, along with several great fans, created a great surprise and atmosphere, allowing for the perfect birthday celebration for one of our 'Bama' boys.
Coach Getman gave everyone Monday off in order to recover from any injuries, bruises or sore muscles you get from playing two games in three days. We begin practice in preparation to host our annual UAB Classic on Friday and Sunday of this coming weekend. We really hope all the UAB students and fans come out to cheer us on throughout the weekend. We are now 2-2 and ready for our tournament this coming weekend!
I look forward to doing this on a weekly basis, so until next time, thanks for reading and keep cheering for the BLAZERS!!
