Has it already been a week? These weeks seem to be flying and in the matter of about a day, it has almost already turned to winter! But, despite the chilly and rainy weather, I am proud to be able to bring you loyal fans some good news from our women's soccer team.
The previous week, we played in Texas and found ourselves splitting the games with one unfortunate loss and one solid win. Overall, it was not a bad way to come back home to play another week of great conference competition. Going into our home games, Coach Harbin really wanted to focus on accurate attacks by getting in line, finding a target and being able to hit that target as consistently as possible.
Coach Harbin was also was focused on defending. A lot of talk comes from our goalkeepers, sophomore Kate Blankenship and freshman Ashley Park, and our back line. We worked on a few key terms just to simplify the direction being given so we don't have confusion and people meaning the same thing yet saying them differently. You will not be quizzed on this, but the key words we want to use on defense are step, shift, side on and out.
After two days of monotonous work at practice, we were ready for game day. Friday night we found ourselves playing SMU. Last year they were first in the conference, so we knew this would be a tough game and we would have to be ready to come out and play. We definitely came out ready to play. Our team really seemed to put all of the little pieces together better than we have so far and come out with 3-1 win. Goals came from senior Jill Porto, senior Sally Palmer and sophomore Danya Barsalona.
After a pretty solid win, Coach Harbin gave us until 12:00 p.m. to enjoy it, then we had to start focusing on our game Sunday against Tulsa. Saturday we had a productive practice by refining some defending and attacking pieces. Finally Sunday came and it still felt so good to be home. Not only to play in front of our great fans, but also to eat at our favorite pre-game meal place, Crestline Bagel. So, after a great meal, we were all ready to be back in action and came out with a 2-0 win over Tulsa. The first goal came from senior Sally Palmer in first half and second goal scored by senior Jill Porto.
Even with another win, we found ourselves playing really lazy and sloppy in the first half, but after a good halftime speech and figuring some things out, we definitely stepped it up in the second half and improved on what we were previously struggling with. This win also makes us 4-0 at home and we hope to continue that streak this coming weekend, where we find ourselves playing the No. 1 team in the conference, UCF, on senior night Friday at 7:00 p.m. Then we will play on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Southern Miss. As always, our team would definitely appreciate any support we could get this weekend, even if it's a thought or prayer! Thanks again for reading, have a good week and stay warm!
