DONNIE MARSH - Men's Basketball

This is very hard to swallow...a second year in a row where we are coming home after one day at the C-USA Tournament. There is no way in this world anyone could have told me that would be our destiny. After winning 22 games; stringing together 5 wins out of our last 6 games; being in position to earn our way into the NCAA Tournament with a strong C-USA Tournament run; I felt we were poised to step onto the big stage and make some noise. Perhaps the stage was a bit too big for some of our guys. Our effort against Tulsa was disappointing to say the least. We lacked the energy you have to bring to the floor to win at this time of the year when everybody is playing for something. We showed no sense of urgency at a time when a sense of urgency was very much the order of the day. We had no killer instinct when you need to put a team away. And we simply didn't fight at a time when the only way to survive is to dig in and scrap.
We lost to a more determined Tulsa team and that doesn't sit well with any of us. I take some of the responsibility because over the past few games our defensive performance has not been up to the normal standards we set throughout the year. We lost some of our bite defensively and teams took advantage of us. If we are fortunate to receive an invitation to play in the post season, I'll have to find a way to get that bite back. I am confident I will. When we are defending with energy and urgency we are a very good defensive team. When we aren't, we are very vulnerable.
One of the biggest disappointments for me is that we let a lot of our Blazer fans down. The group that traveled to Memphis to support us - the band; the cheerleaders; the dance team; staff; administrators; boosters; alums; etc - to let them all down really hurts. Our fans were vocal and enthusiastic, but our play never rose to a level that showed how much we appreciated that support. That, for me, is disappointing. I hope we have a chance to get back on the floor to put a better finish on the season than what's lingering right now. We'll know that on Sunday night.
