TIME FOR SHOPPING, PARTIES AND HOOPS
I know it's only the first full week of December, but I can feel the "rush" of the Holiday Season already. A crazy football season has taken a break, and now we can focus all our attention on basketball.
The UAB men are wrapping up a nice run of four of five games in the friendly confines of Bartow Arena. The Green and Gold will play host to Alabama A&M on Tuesday to close out that stretch, and Mike Davis would love to see his team make it a five-game win streak with a victory over the Bulldogs. The month of November was chaotic for the Blazers, in all sorts of ways. A busy schedule was compounded by the injury to Paul Delaney. I'm sure all the players were trying to slow things down, get their feet under them and make sense of what had to seem like total madness.
To their credit, it seems as if they have. The win last Saturday over Cincinnati was entertaining and impressive. The Blazers shot the ball well, again, in the second half, used good defense to spur the offense and showed signs of building the all-important team chemistry. After the game on Tuesday night, UAB will have some quality time on the practice court. The coaches have all indicated they're not terribly thrilled with the way the schedule has fallen, but you have to squeeze in games as best you can. The rest of the month will feature games on Saturdays, the next three on the road.
I hope you'll come out and support both the men and women. While the men will be traveling a good bit the next three weeks, the women will finally be playing at home. Audra Smith's team will play its first home game of the year on Wednesday night. The Blazers will entertain Charlotte at 7 PM, and then they will spend the rest of the month at Bartow Arena. You'll have a total of nine chances to see the women in action here in Birmingham, and I do hope you'll come out and show your support.
It is a busy time of year for everyone. Shopping, parties, travel and family are the key ingredients to a hectic December. Students and student-athletes have to factor in exams, as well. Do your best to balance everything, stay healthy and be safe.
See you at Bartow Arena for Blazer Basketball!
