GREETINGS FROM LAFAYETTE
The Green and Gold are getting set for a game tonight (Tuesday) against the Ragin' Cajuns of UL-Lafayette. It was very chilly here when we arrived last night, but it's a little warmer today...and we should be quite comfortable in the Cajundome this evening!
Football season has come to an end for UAB, and Neil Callaway's team certainly made it an entertaining finale last Saturday in Huntington, WV. The Blazers and the Thundering Herd combined for almost 1000 yards of offense, not to mention some exciting kick returns that played a big role in the outcome of the game. It was unfortunate the Blazers couldn't quite pull it off in the final seconds, but, as they have done most of the season, the green and gold put up a great fight, even down three touchdowns at the half. I know coach Callaway and his staff are busy at this moment working on the 2008 recruiting class, and the returning players will be hard at work in the off-season to get bigger and better.
There were plenty of close calls this season, and I think with another year of hard work in the weight room, another spring practice under coach Callaway, and a solid recruiting class, things will turn around. Those close calls that went against UAB in 2007 will start going in the win column.
Now the focus shifts entirely to basketball. Coach Davis and the Blazers stand at 4-3 on the young season, and the month of December is awfully important. UAB will spend the majority of the month on the road and will be facing some quality opposition, especially the mid-month meeting with Kentucky in Louisville. It's a chance to build some momentum heading into the Conference USA schedule, and it's also a chance to pick up some quality wins away from home...always important when discussions break out in early March.
Steve Mitchell and I will have the call tonight in Lafayette, and for the rest of the season. I hate that I haven't been able to be at every single game so far, but it's difficult, if not impossible, for me to be in Daytona AND Memphis at the same time! I've enjoyed my brief time this season with the basketball team and especially Steve Mitchell. He's a wonderful UAB resource, plus he's a lot of fun to work with.
I hope you all had a very Happy Thanksgiving and are ready for a hectic final month of 2007. It will be filled with shopping, eating, parties and UAB BASKETBALL.
Have a great week, and GO BLAZERS!!!
