HATTERS, TIGERS, BONES AND MORE

Blazer Fans,

It was a "mixed bag" over the weekend for the Blazers. UAB football turned in a fantastic effort against UCF, now the East Division leader, on Saturday night at Legion Field. Perhaps it was the emotion of "Senior Night", perhaps it was the fact there were a few more healthy bodies on the field...whatever the reason, the Blazers put up a great fight against the Knights. The final score wasn't what we were all hoping for, but there was a noticeable difference in the overall performance. I think there are plenty of positives to take from the game, and I hope the squad will be as enthused this coming Saturday in Memphis.

The second-annual "Battle for the Bones" comes this Saturday at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The Green and Gold are hoping to make it eight straight wins over the Tigers and bring the monstrous trophy, a bronzed slab of ribs, back to the Magic City. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 2:30 PM, and CSS will provide television coverage. The Blazers ISP Sports Network will be on the air at 1 PM with pre-game.

Speaking of the radio network, it is a crazy time of year for all of us. Football and basketball overlapping for the next couple of weeks will cause a little shifting on the network, but the good news is you'll be able to hear all the action of both football and basketball thanks to our flagship station, HOT 107.7, and sister stations WJOX-FM 100.5 and WAPI-AM 1070. We got several emails from fans after our football post-game show got cut off prematurely last Saturday, but the good folks at Citadel Broadcasting have assured us the technical snafu has been corrected and you'll be able to hear every minute of our football and basketball games.

Men's hoops was one of the highlights of the weekend. The Blazers went to Atlanta, GA, on Saturday night, and coach Mike Davis saw his squad turn it up in the second half. Robert Vaden canned EIGHT three-pointers and scored 26 points in the 86-63 win over Georgia State. Reggie Huffman added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Walter Sharpe totaled 13 points and nine boards in the season-opening victory. UAB has its home opener on Tuesday night against Stetson. Tip time at Bartow Arena is set for 7 PM, and we'll be on the air with pre-game beginning at 6:30 PM.

This weekend, the Blazers will travel to Daytona Beach, FL, for a tournament. UAB will face Florida State at 7:15 PM on Friday. Then on Saturday, the Green and Gold will square off against Georgia Southern at 1:15 PM. They'll wrap up play on Sunday afternoon against Rhode Island, also at 1:15 PM. Brad Law and Steve Mitchell will be calling the games, and you'll be able to hear the Friday and Sunday match-ups on HOT 107.7 FM, while the Saturday game will air on WJOX-FM 100.5. Again, we appreciate our broadcast partners for their help in bringing you every football AND basketball game. Trust me, it takes a lot of coordination and cooperation to make it all happen during this hectic time of year.

Well, I think that's it for this week. I hope everyone is as excited as I am about Blazer basketball...see you on Tuesday at Bartow...and bring those wet naps with you to Memphis on Saturday as we enjoy some BBQ and another win over the Tigers.

GO BLAZERS!!!
