EIGHTH TIME THE CHARM?
It's getting to be that time of year...great for fans, not so much for announcers! With November rolling around, football is entering the final month of the regular season while basketball is just tipping off. It's been a tough go of it for coach Callaway's Blazers the last few weeks, but despite the loss to Southern Miss last Saturday, I did see a renewed spark or energy or whatever you want to call it. I do think the more physical week of practice was good for this UAB football team, even though it didn't help on the score board. I expect more of the same this week on the practice field, and let's hope it translates into more tangible results this Saturday against UCF, a team many people think is the best in Conference USA, regardless of what the records or standings may show.
It's the final home game of the season for the Green and Gold, and it looks like our batting average will remain perfect...the weather is supposed to be fantastic, AGAIN. Please come out and show your support for the team, especially the seniors, who will be making their final appearance at Legion Field, as well as our amazing armed forces. It will be Military Appreciation Night this Saturday, so get ready to applaud your Green and Gold, as well as the Red, White and Blue. Kickoff is at 6:30 PM...note the slightly different start time...and CSTV will air the game. As always, the Blazers ISP Sports Network will have coverage beginning 90 minutes prior to kickoff. We'll be set up inside Blazer Village for the pre-game show with air time set for 5 PM.
As for basketball, the 2007-08 season-opener arrives this Saturday night. Coach Mike Davis watched his team in "live" action last Thursday at Bartow Arena. The only exhibition game of the pre-season saw the Blazers put together a solid second half to dispose of West Alabama, 83-48. After a slow start, UAB cranked it up in the final 20 minutes, and Blazer fans saw glimpses of why there is plenty of excitement surrounding this team.
The season begins in earnest this coming Saturday in Atlanta. The Blazers hit the road to face Georgia State in Atlanta, with tip-off set for 7 PM central time. Since they're still working on perfecting that cloning stuff, I will be in Birmingham while Richard Musterer and Steve Mitchell will be calling the basketball game. We appreciate our friends at WUHT-FM 107.7 and WSPZ-AM 690 here in the Magic City for helping us get both the football AND basketball games on the air. Football will be on HOT 107.7 while hoops can be heard on WSPZ.
Best of luck to the UAB women's basketball team. Coach Audra Smith's team will open their season on the road, as well. The Blazers travel to Nashville on Friday to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Don't forget, Blazers All-Access will be on the air this Thursday night from 6-7 PM at Full Moon BBQ in Hoover. We'll be talking football, basketball, and anything else you'd like to discuss. You can call us or email us. Send your comments or questions to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll answer them on the air.
Have a great week...rest up, it's going to be a fun, busy month!
