SAN ANTONIO – The UAB baseball team dropped its regular season finale 12-2 to UTSA at Roadrunner Field on Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind 4-0 in Saturday's series finale, the Blazers loaded the bases in the top of the fifth to put pressure on the Roadrunners. Peyton Puckett smacked a one-out single before catcher Joseph Kiel and shortstop Gavin Lewis Jr. both reached to load the bases with just one out. Roadrunner winning pitcher Ulises Quiroga, however, recorded a strikeout and a lineout to end the UAB threat unscathed.
The Blazers tallied their first runs of the game in their next at-bat when Christian Hall belted a two-run home run to center field in the sixth, slicing UAB's deficit to 4-2 with nobody out. The Roadrunners, however, responded in the bottom half to stretch their lead to 6-2 when Jonathan Tapia recorded a two-RBI single to center field.
UTSA (35-19, 19-11 C-USA) pushed the game to its final margin with six runs in the seventh, plating all six runs with two outs in the frame.
Hall finishes the regular season with a .371 batting average, reaching double digits in homers with his 10th home run of the year in the sixth inning. Sears finishes the season leading the Blazers with 17 home runs, 63 RBI and 115 total bases.
Puckett registered his second multi-hit game of the weekend on Saturday, going 2-for-3 to improve his batting average to .279 for the season.
UAB (31-23, 13-17 C-USA) will now head to the Conference USA Tournament for the first time since 2018, clinching a spot in the postseason with a 14-4 win over FIU this past Sunday at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers will open the tournament against top-seeded Southern Miss, who secured the regular season title with a 9-4 win on Thursday night over Middle Tennessee.
The eighth-seeded Blazers will face the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch at Pete Taylor Park is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
