TROY, Ala. – The UAB baseball team scored the first eight runs before holding on late to post a 10-8 win over Troy in Tuesday's game at Riddle-Pace Field.
With the win, UAB clinched its 14th 30-win season and first since 2015, which is when the Blazers advanced to the Conference USA Tournament championship game in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The victory also marks win No. 30 for first-year head coach Casey Dunn, making him the first coach in UAB history to win 30 games in his inaugural season.
The Blazers (30-21) captured an early lead when Josh Sears crushed his team-best 15th home run of the season to left field, bringing home leadoff batter John Marc Mullins from third on the two-run shot. UAB starting pitcher Dalton Skinner then retired the Trojans in order in the bottom half, quickly bringing the Blazers back to the plate.
UAB tripled its lead with a pair of two-out, two-RBI hits in the second inning to make it 6-0. Logan Braunschweig singled up the middle with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 4-0, plating catcher Joseph Kiel and Peyton Puckett on a 1-1 count. A wild pitch then moved Braunschweig to second before Christian Hall singled through the right side to stretch UAB's advantage to 6-0.
Skinner dominated in the first three frames to preserve UAB's early lead, tossing three hitless frames with three strikeouts. The Blazers built on Skinner's efficient start in the top of the fourth, extending their lead to 8-0 when Hall delivered another two-out, two-RBI single to score Mullins and Braunschweig.
Troy (29-22) answered in the bottom of the fifth with its first runs of the game, scoring its first run behind an RBI double and the second via a wild pitch with two outs. Reliever Brady Greene ended the Trojan threat in the fourth, inducing a flyout to center field to maintain UAB's 8-2 advantage.
Gavin Lewis Jr. drove in UAB's ninth run with two outs in the ballgame with an RBI infield single to first base, scoring Kiel to make it 9-2. Troy trimmed UAB's lead to four runs in the bottom half with three runs on two hits.
The Trojans cut their deficit to a single run in the seventh, scoring all three of their runs without recording an out. UAB's Thomas Ballard entered midway through the bottom of the seventh to get the Blazers out of the jam, recording a strikeout, groundout and lineout to end the frame.
Collin Taylor struck out the side in the eighth inning to preserve UAB's one-run lead before the Blazers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. UAB recorded its 10th and final run with two outs for the game when Kiel singled up the middle to score Caleb Floyd from second base to make it 10-8.
Aidan Moza then sealed UAB's 30th win of the season in the bottom half, allowing just one batter to reach to pick up his third save of the year.
Four Blazers tallied multi-hit performances, highlighted by Hall's 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBI and a double. Mullins upped his batting average to .330 on the day with a pair of singles and three runs scored.
UAB will conclude its regular season schedule this weekend at UTSA (33-18). The three-game series in San Antonio is set to begin on Thursday at 6 p.m. All three games will stream live on CUSA.tv.
