UAB Baseball Completes Series Sweep Over Northwestern

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team capped off the four-game series sweep over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon with a 11-5 victory at Young Memorial Field.

The Blazers move to 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2015. The series also marks the fourth time in six seasons that the Green and Gold have swept an Opening Weekend series. Over the four games, UAB outscored Northwestern 33-17.

Redshirt junior Brooks Walton picked up the win after tossing five innings, allowing only one run. Walton is the third Blazer in the series to pick up their first win wearing Green and Gold (Carson Myers and Thomas Ballard).

At the plate, Christian Hall led the Blazers after going 2-for-4 with a triple, solo home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Caleb Floyd recorded three stolen bases in the contest.

UAB opened up the scoring in the first inning with two runs. With a runner on, Josh Sears sent a double down the left line to score John Marc Mullins from first. Sears would later come around to score on a wild pitch.

The Blazers added two more runs in the second following a throwing error by Northwestern that scored Tyler Waugh and Brandon Willoughby for the 4-0 advantage.

Northwestern (0-4) responded in the third with a single by Vincent Bianchina that brought in a run from second to cut the lead to 4-1.

With bases loaded in the fifth, a wild pitch scored Hall. A pinch-hit single by Peyton Puckett brought in two more runs to jump out to a six run lead. UAB added two insurance runs in the sixth, bringing the score to 9-1.

The Wildcats added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, cutting the lead 9-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, UAB tacked on two more runs that featured the solo home run by Hall that landed on University Blvd.

Northwestern brought in the final run of the contest in the ninth for the final tally of 11-5.

The Blazers head to Hammond, La. for a three-game series at Southeastern, Feb. 25-27. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
