BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham City Council passed a 6-3 vote on Tuesday afternoon to commit $3 million per year over a 30-year span to renovate the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center and to build a new downtown stadium.
Along with passing the vote, the City Council also unanimously approved a resolution that will create a neighborhood revitalization fund.
"This is the right thing to do because it has the full benefit for our entire city," said Mayor Randall Woodfin. "We can support neighborhood revitalization and economic development."
"We continue to be encouraged by the steps taken by both state and local leadership in relation to the proposed renovations at the BJCC," said UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram. "Mayor Woodfin, the City Council, Jefferson County, the BJCC, State Legislators and community leaders have worked together to make this happen. The renovations will continue to grow our city and we are excited to be a part of it."
Once completed, UAB will be the main tenants to the stadium, which will also host concerts and other events throughout the year.
The Blazers are less than two weeks away from their annual Spring Game which is set for April 7 at Legion Field. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by clicking here. Season tickets for 2018 are also on sale here.
